Weekend homework

Consider the question: What are the ethical considerations of new technologies?

How would you answer this question in regard to the feed? In other words,

“What are the ethical considerations of the feed?”

Your answer should be short essay format. One paragraph is acceptable. You can have more than one paragraph.

Suggestions:

  • Remember to plan ahead by listing the key ideas you will work with.
  • Then find support for those ideas in the book.
  • Include all of the components: a very short hook, introduce the book, state the thesis, support it with PPC, and a short conclusion.¬†
  • Make sure to include page numbers for all direct quotes.

The format for a direct quote is: ¬†quotation mark, quote, close quotation mark, page number in parenthesis, period. An example for this is: “We enter a time of calamity…See the pillars fall” (39).

You must post it as a reply to this post.

How would you feel, if you didn’t have a brain, and instead, has a machine to replace it. Feed is an “informational” device that replaced human brain in the future. Feed was an incredible device made by cooperation, making government be small. Cooperation used feed, not as to help, but to advertise and make more consumers.

Allways technology is following us even we are sleeping. That is to say, we need it, also already our lives domestic by technology. Though, there are many positive, and negative effects of technology. Like the book, “Feed”. That includes how can the technique makes our lives more convenient or unhappy. This novel is trying to teach us, the result will be change when we use it desirable way or bad way.
There is a world which the technology developed a lot. In that country, 73 percentage of people have ‘feed’. “ It is our duty as Americans, and as a nation dedicated to freedom and free commerce, to stand behind our fellow Americans and not cast. . .”(85). We could know in that quotation, the president also have the feed because he also mentioned about that company. It means, he is controlling by them.
Many people got brainwashed by feed. ‚Äú Like them never telling you that it‚Äôs a republic and not a democracy…we‚Äôre raising a nation of idiots‚Äù(113) . Many of people got that ‚Äòfeed‚Äô when they were young, so they don‚Äôt know the it is democracy or republic, because ‚Äòfeed‚Äô didn‚Äôt tell it to them.
If somebody have a technical machine in their head, it can be hack by somebody. When Titus was sleeping, police came in to his ‚Äòfeed‚Äô and check something. ‚ÄúThey said that they were going to be running some tests on me, and that I should think about something else.‚Äù(93). It is possible to see all of the information which in Titus’s feed, because it is easy to do. It can be a most biggest weakness part of the feed. Sometimes the technology can be an angel or the evil.

HyunJi, I can tell you worked very hard on this. You’ve started with a hook and then told me the title of the book (the sentence is a fragment – make sure to write a complete sentence). You must remember the reader doesn’t know what a ‘feed’ is. You have to tell them. Your thesis “This novel is trying to teach us, the result will be change when we use it desirable way or bad way.” doesn’t make sense because the reader doesn’t know what ‘it’ is. Also, when you give quotes like the idiots one you have to explain who said it and remember to put the comment after the proof. Also, your conclusion say ‘angel or evil’ but I don’t see any examples of ‘angel’ uses…
      Nice first try.

Technologies locate in center of state expansively. “Feed” by M.T Anderson is a technology based novel which the main characters, Titus and Violet be tormented with their feed. Because, they depend on feed to heavily and feed become important part of their life. On one hand, Titus has faith in mental programming. On the other hand, Violet is uncomfortable for using feed, she realized that feed disturb people‚Äôs thinking with malfunctioning ‚ÄúShe‚Äôs always looking ‚Ķ‚Ķcivilization‚Äù (184).

In the feed, we can found lots of side effect about feed. Such as, get into mal, was controlled from feed and get the useless advertisement “…to Crackdown Alley …only on the Fox…” (182), nevertheless government and company are blind with love of money, so education makes people be a consumer, advertisement get around in the feed. Number of 75% peoples was controlled by government and only 25% peoples being normal even this situations are looks like more malfunction.
At the end part, Violet value of feed is going to decreasing from the getting damage from the hacker. It means that she is dying. This happening is only one part of the result with the feed. In the book, thousands of people are going to die like Violet. This is why people are going to die even they are innocent citizen.

This book is showing to us that what will happen to the earth. Nowadays, technologies are developing until the earth will end. To one’s surprise, people are mad at high technology things. For example, everybody want to buy I phone 5 as much as new. But, the earth makes a sacrifice for people. Such as, giving the material and providing natural energy even our natural going to die like Violet. From now on, We need to make a sacrifice for the our Earth.

HanKyeol, it’s great to see your own work. You’ve worked very hard on this and it shows. You started with a hook, introduced the book, and brought in support from the book, with quotes. Nice job.
The part that is confusing is that you don’t have an easily-identifiable thesis. Therefore it’s hard for the reader to figure out what you are arguing. If you put a clear thesis at the end of the introductory paragraph, then you can make sure to link the rest to that thesis.

Imagine a government that had one fixed purpose; to protect the wealth of all of the citizens in all situation. On the other hand, imagine a technological breakthrough that would destroy that goal on every level and every society around the world. In the book, the government and the society were simply the puppets of those who own the technology.

“Look at us! You don’t have the feed! You are feed!…Look at what you’ve made yourselves!” (202) Imagine a government that had one fixed purpose; to protect the wealth of all of the citizens in all situation. On the other hand, imagine a technological breakthrough that would destroy that goal on every level and every society around the world. The feed in MT Anderson’s book, explores how technological innovation can be lead to the downfall of us all. In the book, the government and the society were simply the puppets of those who own the technology and the people with the feed were very damaged.
The country is run by a president who simply parrots the propaganda of the few companies that own everything, insisting the corporations are out to help people. “It is our duty as Americans… to stand behind our fellow Americans and not cast… things at them” (85). The companies weren’t just controlled the government and the society. The feed actually hugely impacted negatively to people.
Lesion is getting broad wide and harmful to people mentally and physically who have feed by the company. “I want mine to go all the way around. I want it to be like a necklace, but right now, it’s just a torque” (23). Hideous and nasty lesions have developed as a fashion among the nations. By that affect, the company is getting benefits.
The companies are trying to threatened the human society and the government in different ways. They try to control people to get a lot of money and make feeds to conquer the whole world by making people unable to live without it. People should notice and try to get solutions of this problem, the one, which is used in unethical ways.

  5. 17hykim says:

‚ÄúLook at us! You don‚Äôt have the feed! You are feed!…Look at what you‚Äôve made yourselves!‚Äù (202) Have you ever imagined being controlled by human-made machines? Have you ever thought about the situation that the entire nation relies on a device and it becomes the owner of the society? The book called Feed by MT Anderson shows us how the development of technologies corrupt the human society by controlling people who use feed, a tiny chip in brains. In the book, the feed users become dehumanized and become a part of the device as these devices are wired in their head.
The whole world is filled with people who are slaves of companies. Most of nations only have the value in the society and everything is run by gadgets. As the power of devices become stronger and stronger, the owner of the society has changed. Humans are not the owner anymore, the feed, the new technology, has started dominating and making the humans to follow them.
“I want mine to go all the way around. I want it to be like a necklace, but right now, it’s just a torque”(23). Hideous and nasty lesions have developed as a fashion among the nations. “I got a lesion on my foot. You want to see it?” (23). The belief of the feed that everything it says is right makes people to feel proud of themselves having a lesion on bodies. The lesion spreads out and covers all the body as it becomes bigger and bigger and people are losing the nature beauty of bodies.
Feed users don’t have self-thinking brains. They rely on the smart device which is able to think, they just type the keywords and look up the information came up from the internet. “You write?”, “With a pen?” (65) They haven’t thought about writing in a piece of paper with a pen by themselves. Everything is done by the feed and people become slaves of it gradually.
A feed, a tiny chip, is threatened the human society. It tries to conquer the whole world by making people unable to live without it. People should notice and try to be separated from it, the one, which is used in unethical ways.

  6. 17ngood says:

What can technology and corporation do to the world we live in? In a futuristic novel, called Feed, by M.T. Anderson, they had new technology called feed. It worked as part of your brain, controlled by corporation. The corporation would do every thing to sell all kind of stuff to the people who owned “feed.” The feed would keep advertising positive information to the people. They tried to make money without caring how much the products they tried to sell would destroy environment around us. Every living thing was dying, trees were cut down, sea was mixed with toxic and meat became artificial.
The planet was being destroyed. No animals, nor tree, would be left in environment. Too much chemical had been used in many ways. However, the news, given by the feed, was positive even though many places were polluted, most of the natural sources became wasted, and animals were slowly dying. People needed to be more aware of what they did to the environment and to start to fix the problems before it was too late.
For example, the corporate knocked down a park to build an air factory. ‚ÄúYeah. Jefferson Park? Yeah. That was knocked down to make air factory “(125).If they continued their lives like this one, they might need to wear masks everywhere they went. Sea was not the place to swim anymore. Fish were extinct. Any one who wanted to go near the sea had to wear a mask and a suit to protect oneself from toxic chemical in the water.
People destroyed environment by buying more stuff. But the feed made them think buying more stuff was good for them. Meat was not organic or came from real animals like it supposed to be. They made artificial meat for food in a large scale. ‚ÄúIt was a filet mignon farm, all of it, and the tissue spread for miles around the paths where we were walking. It was like these huge hedges of red all round us, with these beautiful marble patterns running through them. They had these tubes, they were brining the tissue blood, and we could see the blood running around, up and down”(142). They consumed too much of natural resources by keep buying things. When all the animals died, they need to replace real meat with factory made artificial meat for people. The people in this story were not aware of what they were doing to the environment and thought only about their own happiness.
‚ÄãWe destroy environment more and more everyday by buying, consuming, and making more stuff for ourselves. If we still keep destroying our environment like in this story, we could end up destroy our future. We might not even have cleaned air to breath, or cleaned water to drink anymore. The factories have to make more stuff for us to buy and destroy the environment at the same time. We should think of ways to save the environment, and choose not to do the same mistake as people in the novel.

Wow! Hard work and so much good here Natty. I am very impressed. You’ve started with a hook, then identified the book and given a bit of plot. You’ve stayed on topic and kept your essay focused. My biggest piece of advice is to make the thesis clearer and easier to identify.
You are making great progress in your writing!

There is new tech-knowledge being made these days, and this makes people’s life a lot more easier. Well, is new tech-knowledge really helping us to grow and learn? In this book called “Feed”, it is talking about how new tech-knowledge can dehumanize human. As there are increasing number of people using these new technologies, it is true that we are not having a life of our own thoughts and dreams. “The girl’s lesion is beautiful. It was like a necklace. A red choker.”(22). Some people this day cannot even figure out whats right and wrong, and thinks whatever information you get from it is fun and reliable. “What the President meant in the intercepted chat. This was, uh, nothing but a routine translation problem. It has to be understood that when the president referred to the Prime Minister of the Global Alliance as a ‘big shithead’.” (119). Keeping in touch with tech-knowledge every single minute will make people to dehumanize. By the time, human will be a shithead if we just do and have fun spending time with these tech-knowledge. There are lot of new tech products made these days such as 3D TV or smart phone, and more time we spend with these, will dehumanize us, and make us to be addicted. There are lot of answers to a question however, it is important for us to know that sticking with new tech-knowledge products will keep us away from being a human, instead be a slave of these products.

Your introduction and conclusion are linked. That’s nice to see. You’ve introduced the book, also good, but since it’s the first time say “the book” and not “this book”. Also give us the author’s name.
Make sure your thesis is linked explicitly to the prompt.
The biggest issue of growth is to more clearly work your PPC. You make assumptions that the reader knows what you’re talking about, so your support is not very clear.
Good first attempt. Let me know if you have questions.

SunJung’s essay (she’s having trouble logging in)
“Violet pointed out, ‘Trees make air,’ which kind of worried me because I knew
Dad would think it was snotty.” (125)
As the science is improving, the nature is polluting. Also in this book, ‘Feed’, the
science improved a lot and people can make feeds a part of their brain. So, they
don’t need to go school, don’t need to study. But people who don’t have enough
money to buy feed, they can’t have feed. For example, Violet got feed later than
other friends. There are some problems with the feed, like people don’t have
privacy, and they have limit of their knowledge. The most serious problem of the
feed is pollution. Feed is one of the products, which is from improvement of science.
People even buy clouds with their money. Because of the pollution from improvement
of science, people also have some air factories. Trees are decreasing, nature are
    polluting by people.
But they don’t realize why is the pollution a problem. For example, Titus’ father
didn’t think that the trees are important for people. He said like they have air
companies, so pollution doesn’t matter for them. But I think that the air companies
will have limit someday, and people need to care about pollution. They need to
    protect nature.

    • cbrown says:

Your hook, consisting of the quote and sentence that follows is a nice way to start. Then you introduce the book. Well done (call it “the book”, not “this book”).

However then you jump from nature to school to Violet (without telling me who she is), to privacy, and then back to pollution.

You need a clear thesis, and then all of your PPC should be about the thesis.
Please ask me if you have questions…

“Because of the feed, we are raising a nation of idiots. Ignorant self-centered idiots” (113). Have you ever imagined a world with people who don’t have their basic education, and are controlled by human made machine? The book “Feed” by MT Anderson shows us how our future might look like if we continue to develop our technology method. The tiny mind controller, feed, is used to advertise products and “teach” children and teenagers all they need to know. Unfortunately, individuals who do not have the feed are the clever ones. People who have the feed cannot read or write, because they think they have all the information they need on Google. When it comes down to talking, teenagers prefer chatting, so they won’t need to use as much details to develop their ideas. “Holy shit… Holy shit…Holy shit” (90, 91). Instead of learning how to write and read, people are learning how to design their bedrooms. “And now we do stuff in classes about how to work technology and how to find bargains and what’s the best way to get a job and how to decorate our own bedroom” (110). How can people get a job, if all what they learned in school was how to get a job, and their boss is judging them by what they learned? At one moment of the book, the characters experienced what it is like to not have a feed, and they found it difficult to express intelligence. “There were five walls, because the room was irregular. One of them had a picture of a boat on it. The boat was on a pond or maybe lake. I couldn’t find anything interesting about that picture at all. There was nothing about to happen or had just happened” (45). If this is what happened for one day think how boring will a whole life be for that generation. As a conclusion, children’s future education is in great danger, and our knowledge, too. If we don’t want to get to that situation we got to stop following new trends.

    • cbrown says:

Wow, strong introduction! Good hook, nice intro of the book and author, and I love how you called the feed a “tiny mind controller”.
Your thesis is partly there, but you have used a number of examples that include this notion of consumerism. I think you need that in your thesis.
      Nice job incorporating your proof.
You are working in the right direction with your conclusion “As a conclusion, children‚Äôs future education is in great danger, and our knowledge, too. If we don‚Äôt want to get to that situation we got to stop following new trends.” However I would like to suggest you clearly link these ideas to the feed and how this is the cause of ‘that situation’. I would also use more precise terminology than ‘that situation’. Explain exactly what you mean here.

‚ÄúAre these things really better than the things I already have? Or am I just trained to be dissatisfied with what I have now?‚Äù ‚Äï Chuck Palahniuk, Lullaby. In the book ‚ÄúFeed‚Äù, written by M.T.Anderson, he explains the changes that may happen to us in our future. The internet and the commercials are in their heads and they can never stop it. The feed washes their brain, their thoughts, and their decisions. Thee school that they go to doesn‚Äôt really teach them any thing. The feed becomes a huge part of their lives. It controls everything they do and think. It becomes their friend. They miss it. “I missed the feeds… Everything that goes on, goes on the feed… So there’s all the entertainment I was missing without feed…”(47,48). They can’t live without it. They got used to all the news that they get a they are addicted. The main idea of feed is to sell things. The idea is to tell people what to do. “Our feeds were burbling all sorts of things about where to stay and what to eat” (3). Titus and his friends have no choice about things. They believe to the feed and that he is right all the time. Titus, and almost all America, are trapped in the feed net and its hard to get out if it. They can’t change anything because they are hypnotic to the fake world under feed.

However, for people like Violet who had feed when they were somewhat matured it awfully bugs them and tortures them. Also, the commercials differ for all individuals according to their action which means feed is watching you all the time. That’s how we treat criminals in 2013, which doesn’t protect the privacy and it certainly goes against ethics.

Your point proof throughout is for the most part very good.
However your comment is in most places too long and moves beyond the point you’re trying to make. Keep it tight and relevant.
Your fourth paragraph “It had to be…” is rambling a bit too much. Make your point early on and then only include the information that specifically addresses it.
Lastly, when you introduce a character, such as Violet, you need a very short mention of who it is in the context of the book. However you need to be careful not to ramble and over-tell the plot when you do so.
    Well done 🙂

Corporation Environment Detriment: an Essay on the Book ‘Feed’
“That is so like corporate” (126). Feed, by M. T. Anderson, is a science fiction book about people with their brain being a computer. The world that the characters, Titus and Violet, are living in is completely transformed from what we are living in today. What children are learning at school is useless, the clothes people are wearing are made out of plastic, and meat is being grown as a plant. Nonetheless, the environment is completely changed. The corporations are destroying the environment, by cutting down trees to make factories.
Cutting down a forest to make an air factory is what the corporations in Feed are doing. The new technologies in Feed are destroying the environment in an unethical way. “… Jefferson Park? That was knocked down to make an air factory….Threes make air.” Violet (one of the main characters), being the only one who knows what damage cutting down the forest would do, knows what the corporations are doing. The way the feed is shaping the community leaving, not only the nature to vanish, but everything that we, living in the real world, is gone. As mentioned, clothes are made out of plastic, and in school, children are being taught how to decorate their rooms. The environment is fading away, with the feed, leaving the people to do nothing about it.
The corporation does whatever they want. If that means destroying the environment, then so be it. Unethical the feed is controlling the people to do such dumb things as cutting down treed to make an air factory. Without the feed, the people would maybe do worse or better, looking at the world we humans live in, it is not working that much better. People with feed are damaging the world, because that is what they are told to do without even knowing what they are doing. On the other hand, the environment today is being destroyed with all eyes and ears on it. Technological, or not, the environment is being harmed.

    • cbrown says:

Anna Sophie, there is much good about this essay. You started with a hook, introduced the book, gave background, and then the thesis.
There are several other examples of environmental degradation besides the trees. Decorating their bedrooms and plastic clothing only makes sense in this context if you link it to environmental degradation.
In other words, you need more varied and clearly articulated support.
The conclusion is working in the right direction, but the last sentence could be more pointed and hard-hitting.

Have you ever live in an environment that all of countries rely on a tiny device and began to conduct the society? MT Anderson’s feed is about a falling futuristic society that is being slave to a large corporation called “feed”. In the feed, almost everyone has feed installed in their brains.
